We could make our character a bit more fashionable. Ofcourse it's an adventurer but I don't think the player will identify himself with an adventurer like the one shown above. Ofcourse this would be in sync with the setting, but how about a young man with a nice leather jacket who will put on a (Indiana Jones) hat when he enters the cave. This way it will be a ride and a transition from being a normal person to an adventurer. Just like in some rides in disneyland where you become the involved, a character instead of the audience.
I personally think that doing so will also have a metaphore for the player. Starting of as a young gun and turning into a designer. It also does come with some constrainst but think of it in this way. Everything in our ride has been designed from the view that it is related to the design constraints and resembles something (a metaphore). But why is our character not designed this way? It probably will be some more work then we initially expected but I think it's something not to be overlooked and designed from pure randomness and cliche just to fill up a hole.
A guy with a shirt on. He roles up his sleaves and puts the hat on when he enters. Resembling that he is going to do the job and putting on his (six thinking) hat. This moment will also be setting the mood of the avatar (non verbaal) that he is kick ass and is about to embark on an adventure.

Another idea,
